What is '<Bad format hint>'?

I am using
ups version 3.35 (build date: Fri Sep  8 12:28:12 PDT 2000)

on a Sparc Solaris machine:
SunOS newdevel 5.6 Generic_105181-13 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-4

Sometimes while debugging moderately complex C++ code (templates,
dynamically loaded modules) I get <Bad format hint> when attempting to
display a simple variable value.  Is there something I can do to fix
this?  I didn't see it mentioned among the "known bugs" in
http://www.concerto.demon.co.uk/UPS/BUGS but it happens fairly
frequently to me.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
