Not an ELF file

Hi,

I'm fooling around with KDevelop 1.4. I generated a small test program and 
tried to debug it with ups. I got the following error:

Can't debug simple: it is not an ELF file.

But Linux executes it perfectly. Gdb doesn't work either, leading me to 
believe it's a problem for both debuggers.

Configuration: Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.4.4, ups 3.37beta2, gcc 2.95.2

ups 3.36 displayed the same behaviour. Note: I generated debugging symbols; 
the built-in KDevelop debugger seems to work.

Any ideas?
