can you give details of the system and compiler you are using.

Does the attached trivial program also have the error ?
Adding expression
        p_step->layer_list->[0]next
works OK on Solaris 2.5.1 with SC4.0
... but fails when program built with gcc 2.8.1

Sorry, I am not in a position to investigate this further.
Can someone with easier access to a Sparc do so ?
