The problem of using commands in the typing line is that it would be cumbersome to interchange between next and step. So with "%n" in the typing line, each <RET> would do a next, but one would have to edit it to "%s" to get <RET> to do step. The left and right arrows edit the current typing line string, and the up and down arrows move around the history list, so these couldn't be used as function keys for controlling the target. ROd
