    Hmmm. So given that John doesn't like typing % anyway, the better way to
    implement this would be with meta-keys like paste is done and add a set
    of translations in the Xresources file for them. That way, John could
    override them with non-meta keys, he just wouldn't ever be able to type
    an 's' (except by pressing a meta key to get past the translation) for
    example. I suppose you could do something perverse like use num lock as a
    'mode' switcher...
    
    Personally, I don't think it's too much to ask to hold down the Control
