Although the discussion seems to have moved on, I just wanted to mention a minor point: | One thing that hasn't been suggested is to use the keypad keys, a la | the way some text editors work. These days, not everyone has a keypad. There are a number of reasonably slimmed down keyboards that omit the keypad in the interests of saving physical space (and making the mouse easier to reach for right-handers). While things can be rebound in X, one may need to worry about fitting all of the available commands into the available keys if one is missing the keypad or whatever. - cks
